A SNEAK PEEK: The HiBRiD Player's Spielbook, Chapter 2: Foreword

Over the next few weeks, I shall be putting the second chapter of the Player Spielbook (pronounced SHPEEL' book) section by section when I get a chance. Once complete, anyone will be able to create characters for any action-based genre in a modern setting using these default HiBRID rules.

Our current home game, And At Twilight, The Aspens Come, of course, will also use a number of Genre Specific rules, but for those wanting to create their own vanilla games, have fun playtesting with these.

I will start it off today, with the Foreword.

Enjoy!

Foreword
In order to play HiBRiDTM, you need to make a character. Whether you’re a new player looking to make a character for the first time or a veteran player looking for specific character creation information as quickly as possible, you will find the rules you will need in this chapter.

Organization
There are eight steps for character creation:
  1. Obtain and read the genre description
  2. Determine your character’s concept
  3. Determine your character’s history
  4. Select an origin and determine origin stats
  5. Select skills and determine action modifiers
  6. Select aspects and determine action modifiers
  7. Describe your character
  8. Equip your character

To make finding information easier, this chapter is organized into eight sections, one for each step. The sections are presented in the order in which they need to be completed, and in turn, are each divided into three subsections.

The first subsection will describe the purpose of the step and include any game system-specific terms related to its completion. If you are required to make a specific choice from a number of specific options, those options along with their descriptions will also be presented in this subsection.

The second subsection will explain the method for completing the step. Some steps will require you to determine details in descriptive terms using words, while others will require you to determine one or more  numeric values. Numeric values are referred to throughout the game as stats.

The third subsection will provide an example of how to complete the step using the method described in the previous subsection.

Additional Information
In addition to information presented within this chapter, you will find additional information related to creating characters in the following Appendices at the end of the book:

  • Appendix One provides a premade Character Sheet designed for use with the rules provided herein that you can copy as much as you wish and use for your own games.
  • Appendix Two provides an uninterrupted walkthrough of the character creation process, using the Character Sheet from Appendix One.
  • Appendix Three consists of a set of tables and charts provided to help speed up the character creation process.
  • Appendix Four is a glossary of game-specific terms.
  • Appendix Five contains an index of a number of topics in the book and the pages where they can be found.
